Why you need a power of attorney this March and what to do about it

One person in the UK develops dementia every three minutes, yet relatives can’t just walk into your bank and access your money, even if it is to pay for your care.

But it’s not just about dementia. Anyone at any age and at any time, can find themselves in a position where they’re no longer able to make their own decisions.

Getting Powers of Attorney in place means that your family can take charge if you’re no longer able to make decisions for yourself – whether it’s because of illness or a life changing accident. Without it, they’d need to apply through the courts which can be long and costly.

It’s important so, we’re running an initiative to make it more affordable – in March we’re offering Powers of Attorney at £199 each, per person (plus vat) Our usual price is £250 plus vat.

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney

One covers financial decisions and another covers health and care. Having these in place means important and personal decisions are made by trusted people chosen by you. Without Powers of Attorney in place, those decisions will be made by a court or council appointed bodies.

Richard Howard, Director of our Private Client department says “It’s never too early to get the legal paperwork in place, but it can be too late. We’re asking people not just to get prepared, but give themselves peace of mind and prevent future heartache and legal procedures”

Lots of people are put off making them because (1) they don’t know what they are, or (2) they think it means losing control, when actually it just means having something in place ready for if and when you need.
